South Square is a collection of 19th Century workers cottages, in the old Yorkshire village of Thornton, famous for its Brontë connections and its impressive 20-arch viaduct.
Renovated as a community arts centre in 1982, South Square Centre is now home to ten studio spaces for a variety of artists, as well as a gallery, community spaces, archive, fine art framers, bar and a cafe.
The centre hosts community events and activities for all ages, including an ongoing workshop programme and provides community spaces available to hire.
Our capital renovation is now complete and South Square has reopened its doors. The eight-month renovation has transformed the centre and included a new roof, repairs to 99 sash windows, insulation, new electric works and updated fire safety measures.

South Square Centre is currently on the lookout for new Trustees to join the Charity’s voluntary board of Directors. Recently the organisation has been through transformational development; securing a Community Asset Transfer from Bradford Council and undergoing a full capital refurbishment. The wider community has been integral to the success of the project. The centre has garnered support from schools, colleges, care homes, and local community groups as well as businesses and a range of funders including Arts Council England, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Bradford Council.

Following on from South Square’s successful recent building refurbishment, we are pleased to have secured further funding from the Cooperative, National Lottery and Sir George Martin Trust to introduce secondary glazing for 97 sash windows. This is to be installed in November 2021.
We will also be making significant improvements to South Square’s accessibility early next year, configuring the existing toilets to include an accessible toilet, family baby change and an external stone ramp. As part of these works the main gallery will be brought downstairs and we will create a new front entrance!
