South Square needs YOU!

Would you like to preserve the experiences of older generations?
⁃            Are you a good listener?
⁃            Do you enjoy hearing unique stories from everyday people?
⁃            Would you like to improve your communication skills?

South Square Centre is starting a new oral history project.

We’ll be looking for volunteers to be trained and to conduct recorded oral history interviews with individuals who lived in Thornton in past generations. If you have a little spare time to connect with someone over the phone or in person. We’d like to hear from you.

We’ll be offering two afternoon training sessions in September (via Zoom Online Conferencing Software) in which you’ll learn interview techniques including; purpose of oral histories, ethics, and using recording equipment. We hope to conduct a training session in person at a later date, for those who might not be comfortable using zoom. Please contact us if you are interested in either of the above.

We’re looking for participants!

We’re looking to hear from former residents of South Square, Thornton or their family members.

South Square was built in 1832 and began life as 12 mill workers cottages set around a cobbled courtyard. The houses were inhabited by many different families and workers up until the early 1980’s when the houses were transformed into South Square Centre.

If you know someone who lived, was born, had friends/family who lived, at South Square, or would like to volunteer to collect oral histories, please get in touch with Alice; a.withers@southsquarecentre.co.uk or leave a message at 01274834747
