South Square Centre are excited to offer the Joan Day bursary! £1000 bursary to create work for a solo exhibition!

This bursary is to support an emerging, Yorkshire-based artist to create a new body of work and exhibit this in the gallery later this year. Emerging artists who use paint as a prominent feature of their practice are invited to apply for an exhibition. 

As a tribute to the memory of Joan Day, a highly skilled painter who lived and worked in the West Yorkshire region for much of her life, we offer this bursary to support an emerging artists who works with paint.

Emerging artists are invited to apply for an exhibition in September 2026 with an opening event on Friday 4th September. A bursary of £1000 will be awarded to assist with the costs of preparing and installing the work.

Full-time students are not eligible however, we welcome applications from final year students due to graduate in 2026. Artists must be based in Yorkshire, artists based in West Yorkshire will be prioritised. 

To apply you will need to provide an artist statement (500 words or less, or 1 minute audio recording) and between 3 – 5 photos of examples of your work.

The deadline for applications is midnight on Wednesday 6th May. Bursary applications will be judged by a panel of industry experts, and the decision will be shared with applicants no later than Friday 30th May.
