Plenty at the Square is South Square’s fantastic vegetarian cafe with a commitment to seasonal food, reducing food waste and supporting small scale producers. 

The Watchmaker

The Watchmaker is an informal tasting room offering a strong selection of craft ales, wines and artisan gins. The bar has taken on this name to acknowledge the building’s heritage as in 1916 the space was a watchmakers workshop.

Unit 9

Unit 9 are a local artist collective who coordinate and exhibit work for the meeting room space at South Square. Exhibitions change over every month and can include everything from photography and textiles to painting and print. 

Thornton Antiquarian Society Archive

TAS’ local history archive is publicly accessible at South Square Centre. It is open every Wednesday morning and by appointment. To arrange a visit please email antiquarians (at) southsquarecentre.co.uk

Annie Fforde

Annie Fforde is a contemporary practicing artist, with over 25 years of printmaking experience working as a tutor and creating work for printmaking exhibitions and related shows. Annie runs regular printmaking workshops teaching a variety of techniques

Staff

Alice Withers

Alice Withers, is the Director of South Square. She was born in Manchester, now lives in Bradford. Alice is a member of art collective Reet So, Alice has undertaken commissions for Leeds Art Gallery and the Yorkshire Sculpture International festival developing site-specific responses to people and place. She worked as a freelance producer for UP Projects (London) managing The Floating Cinema and its touring programme for Hull City of Culture 2017.

Gemma Bailey

Gemma is the Arts & Heritage Officer based at South Square as part of the wider Bradford 2025 project at Kala Sangam. She has worked in arts & heritage for many years, most recently as a freelancer on projects with the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and AA2A. She first worked with Bradford Museums & Galleries in 2016 before working on NLHF projects with Thackray Museum of Medicine, Craven Museum and the Diocese of Salford. She is also an artist and lover of the outdoors, and she loves exploring the landscape with her sketchbook!

Nushin Hussain

Nushin has over 10 years experience working in the cultural sector in Birmingham with IKON and Culture Central. Nushin is an artist with an interest in geometric islamic pattern work and calligraphy. 

Nushin has joined the team as the Programme & Gallery Manager.

Daniel Butterfield

Daniel is South Square Centre’s building manager, he’s been working for South Square for 3 years after volunteering with us. Daniel has lived in Thornton for 9 years and was brought up in Lower Grange. Daniel has been working in building management for over 10 years and enjoys drawing, furniture up cycling and watching his sons playing football on the weekends.

Jackie De Angelis

Jackie has been working as a cleaner at South Square since 2018. Keighley-born Jackie has been a Thorntonian since 1988 and started out in the textile industry, since then she has worked in automotive and vending industry before she took on cleaning 15 years ago. Jackie is a keen up-cycler and enjoys car boot sales and gardening.
