An exhibition of collages by Ian Tothill in Unit 9 Galllery
Opening: Friday 1st November , 5pm – 8pm
Running : November 2 nd – November 24 th
Ian’s interest in collage making was sparked by making an image for his daughter’s
zine during lockdown in 2020. He has been playing with paper ever since and has
had work included in collage books and several group exhibitions around the world.
Curious is a collection of collages made from all kinds of discarded materials – old
books, packaging, envelopes, photos, magazines, flyers and more. They have been
reassembled to form pictures which reflect his curiosity about colour, ideas,
memory, shape, stories. Some are abstract, others are populated by characters and
images given new life with imagined narratives.
There will be a table of collage materials, scissors and glue in the exhibition and
gallery visitors are invited to make their own collages.
Ian is the founder of South Square Collage Club, a monthly gathering of people who
want to have a go at collage, the most accessible medium.

The Fabric of Memory by Annie Fforde
Opening and Open Studio: Fri 1st Nov , 5pm – 8pm
South Square, Plenty at the Square
Running: 1st Nov 24 – 5th Jan 25
A fabric of memory is a series of monotype and etching prints based on fabric ‘scrim’ used often in the print studio to clean ink off the metal plates. The experience of the fabric retaining it’s innate shape when flattened or pressed reflects our ability to make connections between the real or imaginary memories. The structure of the fabric remains unchanged but the process it undergoes with multiple colours changes it’s appearance over time, reflecting our own interpretations of memories.
All works are original prints using lithographic or etching inks on specialised etching papers. Created in Studio 4, South Square Centre, Thornton..or WYPW. Mirfield.

Stitching Connections
Claire Wellesley-Smith is an artist, researcher and curator based in Bradford. The
ability of textile to transform and connect over time inform her studio, community,
and research practices.
Stitching Connections shows textile work from her studio and community-based
practice over the last 15 years. Projects with Bradford based organisations exploring
the heritage of textile dyes and recycling, creative health and the isolation of
lockdown, speak to a commitment to engaging with subject, communities, and
processes over many years. The pieced and stitched work from collaborative
projects demonstrate the universal language of textiles and commonalities of
experience. Claire’s reflective, durational stitch work is informed by listening to and
being part of conversations through making around the tabletops of Bradford’s many
community spaces of care.
‘In work after work, stitch after stitch, Claire has made her practice – and textiles –
accountable. ‘Fieldwork’ is the term used. Whatever is written in her book, whether is
stitched or dyed, has been lived out: carried around in her community scrap bag; left
in the backyard to be weathered by the elements before being invested with the care
of repair; grown on her allotment, found on an urban walk or experienced in the daily
act of spending time with needle, thread and cloth.’ June Hill
