Painting Workshop exploring Thornton’s Natural Heritage using photography, drawing and gouache
In the first session, we will take photos of areas around South Square and Thornton Village using our phones; capturing views, light and colours and a moment in time. Using one or several of photos we will plan an eye catching painting.
Anji will provide a demonstration of gouache painting techniques, colour mixing and application. Then everyone can have go themselves, using various exercises to warm up and test to see what the scope of the medium is. During the second session, everyone will create their own paintings to take away with them. Anji will be on hand to offer support, advice and tips.
These step by step sessions are designed to be suitable for ALL abilities. We actively encourage people from Thornton and nearby to sign up particularly those who may not have attended a creative workshop previously.
About gouache
Gouache is a silky water based paint formally used to create magazine and advertising images in the days before Photoshop. It is a richer, denser cousin of watercolour and a brilliant, easy to use, forgiving paint for both beginners and seasoned painters.
About Anji Timlin
Like many other artists, her work is inspired by the drama of the local landscape and weather and responds to the spirit of place. Anji is interested in the ruins of heavy industry; the traces of the human footprint on the land in the post-industrial fringes of Bradford – auto-rewilding, anarchic, weedy and exuberant.
Anji studied Textile Design at Bradford School of Art before becoming a freelance textile designer. Since then she has worked in Bradford College teaching art, and as a Teaching Assistant in schools. In 2019 Anji was recipient of South Square’s Joan Day Bursary. Last November the main gallery hosted her first solo exhibition, Far Horizon Bound. The exhibition featured a plethora of local landscapes between Thornton and Haworth, depicting familiar places in a colourful playful way.
