Recently, I have felt scared witless and actionless by the destruction wrought by humanity. Destruction of each
other, destruction of other species, destruction of the
earth beneath our feet and the air we breathe. So I have turned to writers and thinkers who are fighting through the terror to work out how we should live; how we can change direction. These writers explore ways in which we are the same as other species; on our interdependence with plant life; on the repeated patterns of the universe. As a systemic psychotherapist and family therapist, I have long understood that relationships are more important than individual identity and now feel that relationships are central to all forms of life.
So I have been attempting to make art around these themes. The move away from the purely figurative to something that has ambitions towards ‘meaning’ feels risky and extremely difficult. These are some of my first attempts: conversations; our relationship to trees; how to move in a crowd like the murmurations of starlings. I continue to work in watercolour and textiles, using transparencies and stitching to build layers of complexity.
