Hosted alongside the annual Thornton Open Gardens, South Square is delighted to present Sounds of Thornton – a vibrant mini music event celebrating local talent and live performance.
As you explore the village and its beautiful open gardens, you’ll also discover a soundtrack of live music along the way. Enjoy a fantastic mix of jazz, folk, brass bands and solo singers performing throughout the weekend.
You’ll find musicians in gardens, courtyards and around the village streets, creating a lively atmosphere wherever you wander. Sounds of Thornton is free to enjoy, although tickets are required for Open Gardens.
Tickets and maps are available from various venues across the village, including South Square. And if you find yourself enjoying a performance in one of the gardens without an Open Gardens ticket, donations are always warmly appreciated and help support both events.
Here is what we’ve got coming up:
Saturday 4th July:
The Richard Harris Experience // Pop up performances around Thornton
Wandering acoustic duo with over 900 years of experience. Popping up with songs at various locations around the open gardens route.
Hedge Dolphin // Sapgate Gardens
Durational tuba rooted drone soundscape blending in and out of the Sapgate Garden. Doing pop-up sets throughout the day.
Andrew Metheven // South Square Centre // 12pm and 3pm
Andrew Metheven is a lofi/alt-folk songwriter. He released his first EP, A Quiet Life, in March 2022, and his first album – Sister Winter – in June 2024, and has since performed at grassroots venues and festivals across Yorkshire.
Cactusville // 25 Havelock Square (garden no. 2) // 2pm
Cactusville is a local West Yorkshire gypsy jazz quartet based in the Bradford area (with members hailing from Thornton). Known for their Parisian swing, hot club jazz, and mellow ballads, they play frequently at regional markets, community pubs, and local festivals.
Anjaana // South Square Centre // 5pm
The Anjaana Music Band, a historic Bradford Punjabi folk and Bhangra group, is currently promoting their 50 years of musical excellence. Come and listen to the band that recently won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the UK Bhangra Awards.
Sunday 5th July:
Das Funk // 25 Havelock Square (garden no. 2) // 1pm
Sapgate Gardens // 3pm
Das Funk are 7-piece function band who play all over the breadth and depth of the UK. Their repertoire utilizes the raw funk of King Curtis, the heavy bass of James Brown and the household hooks of Stevie Wonder plus many more.
Thornton Community Choir // Kipping House (garden no.3) // 4pm
The Thornton Community Choir is a welcoming, non-audition local group that offers a relaxed atmosphere for residents to sing and socialise. With no previous singing experience required, the choir focuses on community spirit, singing a wide variety of music for fun and occasional local performances.
