Freelance Marketing & Communications Manager

£200pd / 1.5 days per week
Contract length: 9 months with possible extension beyond.

South Square Centre is an arts, heritage and community centre in the heart of Thornton Village, Bradford, housed in former workers cottages. South Square is home to 3 exhibition spaces, 14 affordable studio spaces, a local history archive, framers, café and bar and community garden. The centre hosts community events for all ages, including an ongoing workshop & outreach programme.    

Over the last 5 years South Square has undergone a transformation, raising £1.3m to renovate our Grade II listed building, triggering a community asset transfer of the building, delivering a 3-year NLHF-funded heritage activity programme, improved outreach activities, and footfall has increased to 31,000 per annum.    South Square is preparing for its most ambitious year of programming, aligning with Bradford City of Culture 2025, and the centre is planning a raft of exciting new public programmes punctuated throughout the year.

We are looking for a Freelance Marketing & Communications Manager to support our existing team in the marketing and promotion of our events, outreach and exhibition programme, who will help us maximise and diversify our audience numbers. They will help us to reflect our brand and personality online and support us to raise our profile through and beyond the district. The Freelance Marketing & Communications Manager will implement an existing marketing strategy and be supported by in-house teams who can support the delivery of day-to-day social media management.

The marketing & freelance manager would be responsible for:

Digital Marketing

  • Contribute to the implementation of the digital marketing strategy, considering new and existing marketing channels and opportunities (including email, web, social media and paid advertising).
  • Integrate South Square’s activity into the communications plan and ensure its in-line with the charity’s strategic objectives.
  • Design, write and issue South Square’s regular newsletters to subscribers, as well as writing dedicated emails for specific activities and events to segmented audiences.
  • Work with the team to maintain South Square’s website including planning, creating, reviewing and regularly updating website with timely and interesting content that aligns with the charity’s brand.
  • Manage the delivery of a strategic social media presence and undertake day-to-day management of South Square’s social media channels and communication tools.

Content Creation

  • Write accurate, engaging and targeted copy for a range of audiences across a range of channels.
  • Curate engaging organic social media content, including creating social media banners and videos.
  • Support the design and production of marketing and communications materials (e.g. leaflets and reports) ensuring consistent house style, branding and layout. Supporting event day documentation capture alongside freelance photographers.
  • Setting up paid advertisements where necessary to sell event tickets.

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Analysing and reporting on key analytics to internal and external stakeholders to demonstrate impact.
  • Use insights from different digital channels to optimise our digital communications and build audience engagement

Press

  • Identify and manage local and national press opportunities that help strengthen South Square’s position within Bradford and the visual arts scene.
  • Writing press releases and issuing out press releases

General

  • Managing their own budget, reporting to the Director on marketing budget spends.
  • Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to to ensure our activities are communicated in an accurate and engaging manner.
  • Identifying opportunities that help deliver South Square’s strategic aims and objectives.
  • The role can be hybrid but will require some working onsite to record and capture the myriad activities which happens at the centre.

Person Specifications:

  • Ability to work independently and remotely
  • Previous experience in marketing & communications roles High level of digital competency across different platforms
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Creative flair for marketing
  • Knowledge of press processes and some regional contacts
  • Ability to work and communicate well within a small team
