Maggot Making SFX Make-up Workshop

Inspired by the story of Arthur Bryant, Thornton’s self proclaimed ‘Maggot King’ and founder of the UK’s first maggot farm, we wanted create a gruesome workshop for young people to promote the story.

Bradford College students from the Special Effects Make-Up Course joined us to develop this workshop for a half term Halloween themed workshop. The project is part of their module of professional practice.

The workshop showed participants how to make their own greusome maggots and use special effect make up techniques to create a spooky effect. The workshop was aimed at 11-16 year olds and food and drink was provided to make young people feel welcome in the space.

There was lots of excitement when Leon demonstrated bruising and blood and some of the participants felt confident enough to use the techniques independently.

It was a really exciting to be able to offer it to young people at the beginning of their working careers to give them an idea of what is involved in this career. It would be a fantastic proposition to develop in the future.
