Thornton Open Garden and Make Your Own Prickly Parsonage

On 30th July 2022, as part of Thornton Open Gardens weekend, our visitors created their very own Hedgehog door modelled on South Square’s famous Prickly Parsonage, featured on BBC Look North.

During this workshop, visitors used a template to create their own inviting hedgehog home taking inspiration from their own home or another famous heritage building of their choice. The hedgehog doors could be placed over an inlet in a fence or wall where hedgehogs can enter through.

Hedgehogs can travel up to 5km in the evening, so like to venture through gardens in search of food. We used this event as an opportunity to share tips on how to keep hedgehogs happy and safe in their own habitats.

The workshop took place in the South Square, where visitors could see our own ‘Prickly Parsonage’ created as a homage to the Brontë Parsonage in Haworth. It was the perfect compliment to our Brontë Bat Box, home to our 3 Brontë Bats, and the Brontë Bug Chapel.

We welcomed over 50 people to our garden on this weekend and seven people took part in the workshop.

Thornton Open Gardens is a yearly event that sees the community letting visitors into their gardens to enjoy their planting glory. Over the Summer of 2021, the same volunteers applied to Yorkshire in Bloom and won GOLD!

South Square is a collection of 19th Century workers cottages, in the old Yorkshire village of Thornton, famous for its Brontë connections and its impressive 20-arch viaduct.

Renovated as a community arts centre in 1982, South Square Centre is now home to ten studio spaces for a variety of artists, as well as a gallery, community spaces, archive, fine art framers, bar and a cafe.

The centre hosts community events and activities for all ages, including an ongoing workshop programme and provides community spaces available to hire.
