Bronte Babies is an early-years initiative for new parents, carers and their children.
Attracting over 24 parents and their babies over 3 pilot sessions, South Square in partnership with the Brontë Parsonage facilitated a multi-sensory session which introduced the Brontës to our newest generation. Using Makaton sign language, brightly painted story illustrations, tactile objects and considered sounds, these delightful sessions were full or wonder and revelation. The sessions enabled new parents to connect and share experiences in an unusual space – an art gallery.
The babies were responsive to different aspects of the sessions and many mimicked the Makaton signs during the vibrant story telling lead by Sassy, programme officer at the Parsonage in Haworth. For many of the parents, this was new and exciting way to communicate with their babies when they couldn’t yet talk.
The pilot sessions contributed to research that are to be developed into regular sessions in 2023.
