South Square are proud to present Jess Kidd, winner of the Joan Day Bursary 2023

 
Entitled ‘Searching for the Light’, Keighley based artist Jess Kidd celebrates and reclaims her childhood home in a series of ethereal industrial landscapes and urban environments unique to the town.
 
After a period of illness, Jess began to explore Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This practice of taking risks and making mistakes began to inform her creative practice as well as her chosen subject matter, Keighley.
 
Like many post-industrial towns, Keighley has struggled with economic and social decline. Hearing the negative remarks on the area growing up, she wonders how those habitual digs affected the lives living in the town.
 
By painting a love letter to Keighley, Jess aims to challenge other peoples thought behaviours, encouraging celebration and value in the places we live.
 
 
The Joan Day Bursary was founded in 2006 in memory of Joan Day. Joan was a highly skilled painter who lived and worked in the West Yorkshire region for much of her life. Following her death, her family sold some of her paintings and were looking for a way in which the funds could be used in an appropriate way to honour her memory.

A friend of the family attended and enjoyed an art workshop at South Square. They suggested it could be a place to use the funds for an art related activity. Since then, South Square have proudly supported 14 artists with this annual prize.

2023’s judging panel was made up of Julia Calver, Chair of Saltaire Inspired, and independent artists Shiraaz Ali and Nancy Stedman.

South Square is a collection of 19th Century workers cottages, in the old Yorkshire village of Thornton, famous for its Brontë connections and its impressive 20-arch viaduct.

Renovated as a community arts centre in 1982, South Square Centre is now home to ten studio spaces for a variety of artists, as well as a gallery, community spaces, archive, fine art framers, bar and a cafe.

The centre hosts community events and activities for all ages, including an ongoing workshop programme and provides community spaces available to hire.
